Learn more about Robert Ryland

Bob Ryland, is the first black professional male tennis player who still gives lessons today! As he notes in his new groundbreaking book, “I know what you’re thinking – Wasn’t Arthur Ashe the first? Well, Arthur Ashe came after me, he says. In fact, I helped train, Arthur Ashe. He wasn’t even born until I was 23 years old! As he turned twelve years old, I was 35 and the reigning black tennis champion. He didn’t endure some of the things I went through because I paved the way for Ashe, Althea Gibson, and the Williams sisters. I experienced the harsh and brutal treatment of my time.”

Bob Ryland has been featured in many media outlets.  They have showcased his incredible career and how he trailblazed the game of tennis for many to follow.
